Section 1: The Mexican Culinary Experience
The Allure of Mexican Cuisine
What is it about Mexican cuisine that makes it so irresistible? It's the perfect fusion of flavours, influenced by centuries of tradition, indigenous ingredients, and cultural diversity. From the fiery spices of Salsa to the delicate flavours of Guacamole, Mexican cuisine offers a journey for your taste buds.
The Trio of Temptation: Burritos, Tacos, and Quesadillas
At our canteen, we understand that Mexican cuisine is more than just food; it's an experience. That's why we've created a menu that celebrates the diversity of Mexican flavours while staying true to its roots. Our star attractions – burritos, tacos, and quesadillas – are the embodiment of this.
The Evolution of the Burrito: From Mexico to the USA and Beyond
One fascinating aspect of Mexican cuisine is how it has evolved and adapted over time, particularly in the United States. The burrito, once a simple street food in Mexico, has undergone a remarkable transformation on American soil.
In the 20th century, Mexican immigrants in the United States introduced the burrito to a wider audience. It underwent an exciting metamorphosis, with the incorporation of ingredients like rice, beans, and various proteins, creating a hearty and satisfying meal in a tortilla wrap. The "Mission-style" burrito, named after San Francisco's Mission District, is a prime example of this evolution. These burritos became iconic, and their popularity quickly spread across the country.
Freshness Matters
One of the core principles of Mexican cooking is the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients. We believe in this principle wholeheartedly, and it's evident in every dish we serve. From locally sourced vegetables to carefully selected cuts of meat from Moss Valley Fine Meats, every ingredient plays a crucial role in creating the authentic Mexican flavours you'll savour at our canteen.
Section 2: A taste of Mexico in Sheffield
The Street Food Chef is a family run Mexican street food outlet passionate about providing a healthy fast food alternative to the people of Sheffield. We’re best known for our burritos but we also serve tacos and quesadillas as well as lots of gluten and dairy free options.
We began selling our food on Sheffield’s streets and have been massively supported by the local community. We've received five awards from Eat Sheffield, and are proud to have a reader recommendation in the Good Food Guide and a runner up award in the Observer Food Awards.
We believe that fast food can taste great, without any of the added nasties – all our food is freshly prepared every day and we use locally sourced, fresh ingredients wherever possible. We make a point of working with local businesses such as the award winning Our Cow Molly and Moss Valley Fine Meats, as well as Yee Kwan ice cream.
Our range of fresh chillies and salsas are packed with a punch that Salma Hayek would be proud of and we stock a range of beers, wines, tequila, Mexican soft drinks and a cheeky margarita slush.
Grab your poncho and head to our Sheffield city centre Burrito Escotilla or fully licensed Mexican Canteen and indulge in our lip-smacking menus! Mexican waves are optional.
Section 3: Salsas, Sides, and Drinks
A meal at our Mexican canteen is not just about the main dishes; it's an experience that encompasses every aspect of Mexico. Beyond the main fillings of burritos, tacos, and quesadillas, we take pride in offering an array of salsas, sides, and drinks to complete your experience.
Salsas
The variety of salsas available reflects the diverse regional influences that shape Mexican cooking. From the fiery habanero to the smoky chipotle, our salsas are carefully crafted to enhance and elevate the flavours of your meal. Whether you're looking for a fiery kick or a mild, tangy accompaniment, our salsas are the perfect complement to your dish.
The Salsas we have are:

No burrito is complete without a generous scoop of guacamole. Creamy, flavorful, and loaded with heart-healthy avocados, our guacamole is prepared fresh daily. It's the ideal companion to your tacos or a delightful dip for your tortillas chips (nachos).
Sides
To enhance your Mexican dining experience, we offer a range of sides that capture the essence of Mexican street food. The main one of course being tortilla chips.
